Call of Duty has been among the most popular shooters in gaming history.  The franchise took off with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the game that rose the franchise into the stratosphere.  Due to this, I will only rank the multiplayer modes of every game, beginning with Modern Warfare.

DISCLAIMER: This list is purely based off of my experience playing each edition of Call of Duty, lists may vary.

11. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014)

Talk about a mess.  Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the game that introduced exo-movement into the Call of Duty franchise, and it was quite a disaster.  Plagued my poor hit detection and awful weapon variety, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is an easy choice for last place on this list.

10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016)

Infinite Warfare was hated by the community upon release of the trailer, as the community hoped for a revert back to boots-on-the-ground gameplay that made the franchise to popular.  This was not the case, and the popularity of Infinite Warfare was not long-lived, making it one of the worst in franchise history.

9. Call of Duty: World War II (2017)

Call of Duty: WWII’s release has been dreadful to say the least.  The newest of the series, and the first game with boots-on-the-ground gameplay in four years, has been disappointing, due to the poor server issues, as well as hit detection, and failure to implement worthwhile scorestreaks, makes the latest installment of Call of Duty one of the worst so far.

8. Call of Duty: World at War (2008)

This is the point of the list where the decent games begin to arise.  World at War has a nice, classic feel, with simple menus, killstreaks, and weapons, which make it beloved by the community. However, the MP40 dominates all other weapons, on top of the poor hit detection makes World at War not as enjoyable as other games.

7. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2015)

Treyarch’s first game that included exo-movement was a hit-or-miss for most players in the community, weapon variety and refined gameplay created a memorable experience.  However, Black Ops III is littered with microtransactions, as well as the much-hated exo-movement, makes Black Ops III a game that the community is split among.

6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2007)

The edition of Call of Duty that marked a new era in the gaming world saw the Modern Warfare community explode with popularity.  Modern Warfare is the barebones game with the three killstreak system, and simple selections of weapons.  However, Modern Warfare’s biggest delight happens to be its biggest downfall, as the simplicity of the game can make for a boring experience quickly.

5. Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013)

Undoubtedly the most controversial pick on this list, Ghosts was despised at its inception for the massive maps implemented into the game.  Over time, Ghosts began to become a beloved game due to spot-on hit detection, great weapon variety, as well as excellent downloadable content.

4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2012)

Modern Warfare 3 made for another up-and-down year for one of the top shooters of the past decade.  At its inception, MW3’s spawn system was horrid. A few patches later, somewhat balanced weapon variety, and intriguing game modes make Modern Warfare 3 a memorable game.

3. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012)

Black Ops II is certainly a beloved game throughout the community.  Although there are not stellar servers in the second rendition of the Black Ops series, weapon variety, the masterful introduction of scorestreaks, and fast-paced gameplay makes for an unforgettable Call of Duty experience.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Modern Warfare 2 is the definition of a love-hate relationship in the gaming community.  The lack of weapon variety and the ever-so frustrating grenade launcher attachments can aggravate many die-hard players.  However, extensive varieties in weapons, fast-paced gameplay, and the allusive tactical nuke killstreak made Modern Warfare 2 a classic Call of Duty title.

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the definition of a balanced game in the series.  Solid killstreaks, weapons, attachments, perks, and unlocking system along with the interesting game modes, including wager matches make Call of Duty: Black Ops, the best of the series.
