After being released in 2007, Bioshock by 2K Games became regarded as an instant classic. The game received critical acclaim for its morality-based storyline and immersive environment. An utter masterpiece in almost every sense, very few games since its release have been able to match it in terms of gameplay, storytelling, and atmosphere.It is not only considered to be one of the best First Person shooters of all time, but one of the best video games of all time as a whole. With all of its appraise and prestigious awards, is Bioshock still a good game over a decade after its original release?
Bioshock received such good reviews and praise because of its absolutely compelling storytelling through its incredible world building. Right from the opening scene, the player is drawn into the underwater city of Rapture.
After surviving a plane crash, the player swims toward a lone lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. Following the exploration of the lighthouse’s top floor, the player finds a lone submarine that leads to Rapture.
Rapture seems to be an Orwellian inspired utopia where “Big Sister” is always watching, an obvious homage to George Orwell’s novel 1984. 
The environment this game creates is extraordinary. Even after over a decade after its release, the experience is still genuine and created a sense of genuine terror while I wandered throughout Rapture’s many corridors.
How well this game has aged is remarkable. The game still remains incredibly playable. The mix of simple FPS combat along with the genetically modified powers make combat extremely fun.
The most compelling quality of this game, however, is not the enthralling gameplay, but rather the even more captivating story. At first, Bioshock may seem like a cookie-cutter shoot this shoot that game. As the hours go by, and the story progresses, the player finds out that it is much more than that.
In 2017, there are many great experiences to be had with video games. Multiplayer games currently dominate the market, but very few single player games are worth the hours of isolation when better experiences could be had with other people.
Bioshock is one of them. Despite being over a decade old, its charm and the overall experience when playing it for the first time can hardly be matched. If you haven’t played this one yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up now. I promise you won’t regret it.
