The Throne

Hoover set to debut new play.

Hoover’s Drama teacher David Huber and his talented set of actors have been preparing an exciting comedy with a little bit of drama.

This will be the world premiere of a brand new play “The Throne Room.”

Famous American playwright Jonathan Dorf, who has had more than 2,000 play productions all over the world and has been nominated for multiple prestigious awards, chose Hoover High as the place to release his new piece.

The play consists of scenes and monologues instead of a traditional story.

The cast was chosen in the beginning of January and all of the rehearsals have been done in class.

“We have four directors and the play is scenes and monologues instead of a big story, it’s scenes and monologues… in a bathroom,” Huber said. “So it’s very easy to rehearse about four-five scenes at the same time.”

When asked about the genre of the play, Huber hesitated: “Comedy… with some drama. Comedy-drama. Mostly comedy.”

The fact that the play has just been written makes the experience even more unique for the young actors.

“This is the world premiere of this play, it’s actually still being written, the director is still sending us changes to the script now, a week before the play.” Huber shared.

When asked about the pressure of performing a brand new play, Huber said: “it’s a little stressful to act in front of the playwright, because it’s his words, it’s his ‘baby’ and we wanna do a really good job for him so he can see what the play really looks like.”

Huber also mentioned that it’s been fun working with the playwright because the actors are able to see the process of how he rewrites and adds things to the play.

“I’m really excited to do this play for the first time ever,” said Aren Zazyan, who plays Boy and Blue. “It’s been great working with Mr. Dorf.”

The play will be performed in Hoover’s Little Theater on February 17 at 7:00pm and on February 18 at 1:00pm and 7:00pm and will last about an hour and a half.
