The Hoover Sports History class allows students to learn about sports hands-on. The students all participated in a friendly game of baseball on Thursday at the softball field.
The game ended with a fun “Home Run” Derby.
The students had one minute to hit as many tennis balls as they could onto the outfield grass, using a Little League baseball bat provided by Dr. Edgar Stepanyan, the Sports History teacher and organizer of the event.
Davion Holloway and Raul Viveros tied the lead with nine home runs each and went to a bat-off to determine the winner.
In the 30-second bat off, Holloway hit six home runs and Viveros hit three.
“It feels good, it was fun I got to have some good competition,” Holloway said.
Viveros was a good sport about the whole bat-off and when asked how he felt he said, “It feels alright, I kept trying to hit them, they just kept going back. My competition was pretty good and he knows how to hit the ball.”
Stepanyan also took part in the game. He tossed the tennis balls to the batters and paused the clock when he had no more tennis balls to use.
“The game was so much fun,” he said. “It was hot yet still fun. It was cool to see the kids really get into it and compete.”
When asked what he thought he did during the game that made him win the free prize from the student store, Holloway said, “Just keep my eye on the ball really, it is what I have been taught.”
Viveros also got a free drink for coming in second.
Viveros said: “Baseball is just about having fun.”
