A junior at Hoover High School is able to manage cheer, basketball, and her social life all at once
Emily Aghazarian is the captain of the Hoover girls’ basketball team as well as being on the cheer team. She also takes AP classes while passing all of them.
Aghazarian has filled her daily schedule with as many activities as she can. It all starts at 6:00 am when she goes to cheer practice, after; her day is filled with different AP classes.
“I do homework most of the time in enrichment, if I somehow find some extra time in my AP classes I’ll do it or after practice,” said Aghazarian when asked how she is able to put up with all the work.
Aghazarian had to choose between cheer and basketball but decided to do both.
“I started cheering in freshman year because of my friends and I fell in love with it, basketball was also something I fell in love with ever since I was in 2nd grade,” she said.
While being busy with cheer and all the homework that comes with AP classes, Aghazarian manages to be the team captain of the girls’ basketball team. When asked if she likes being captain she said, “at times yes but it can be very stressful.”
It’s hard to manage social life while being very involved in school.
“For months you will go without having a social life and you will have to say no to so many parties even a simple hanging out with a friend,” she said.
Aghazarian’s responsibilities as a team captain are very complicated.
“When someone doesn’t understand something I have to make sure I explain it and be there for them and if they’re having a bad day I have to be in a good mood to get them in a good mood,” she said.
Basketball can be mental most of the time.
“I get extremely mad when I get injured, I’m the type of the person that likes to play through it which takes a lot on my body after,” said Aghazarian.
Even with all the work on herself mentally and physically, Aghazarian stays determined.
Said Aghazarian: “There’s days where I definitely want to quit and not do it anymore but I know the moment I quit, I’ll regret it.”
