The Hoover Tornado Marching Band went off to the Division 2A championships on Saturday and performed its show called “The Crow” at Newport Harbor High School.
Hoover placed third overall in the division and earned awards for High Percussion for the 11th year in a row, and High Auxiliary (Color Guard) for the third year in a row and will advance to the state championships.
HTMB arrived to Newport Harbor High School on time at 4:30 p.m.
However, HTMB’s performance time was at 8:30 p.m.
HTMB had a couple hours until it performed.
As time passed, its performance time was near and HTMB was ready to perform.
Hoover marched onto the track to prepare to go onto the field. However, due to the competition rules, HTMB was not allowed to go on the track, giving them less time to prepare props and getting onto the field.
“It was kind of stressful on the student, it affected the color guard on setting up in time and the band had to make some adjustments to that as well,” said by Melissa Campbell, HTMB’s director.
Added Erik Guzman, percussion tech for HTMB: “There was just a lot of mental things in terms of personal things going on. We were just personally all thinking of a lot of things at once and that was messing with our ‘A’ game.”
However, HTMB did not let that affect its performance.
“However, we still were able to pull through, we were still able to do what we did at the best of our ability and I am greatly appreciative that the band was able to pull through and still do what they were there to do,” said Guzman.
