A mystery has fallen upon Hoover High School with “Clue,” a play based on the iconic board game, being put on as a play by the Drama department.
The show takes the audience inside Boddy Manor, where six guests (Reyes Felix Jr., Ava Selway, Sophia De Leon-Perivancich, Ryan Cantos, Joshua Keim, and Selah Rogers) arrive, all invited to a dinner party.
They meet Wadsworth the butler (Aiden Herbulot-Thomas), who leads the play, and Yvette the maid (Eva Lyudmirsky). The guests embark on a night full of exposed secrets, murder, and mystery filled with unexpected plot twists.
Clue is the first theater production of the 2023-2024 school year, and lots of work has been put into it, from the building of the set to memorizing lines, to the friendships made between the actors and the crew. The biggest connection made, was between the actors and their director, Anna Marie Schmidt.
“One thing that’s been really exciting about directing this particular show, is that there is a lot of quick movement, quick changes and being able to see the cast play that out and hit all of their comedy notes while also seeing the incredible set, has been amazing,” Schmidt says.
Rogers, who plays Ms. Scarlet, is also thrilled about the show.
“This is Ms. Anna Marie’s first show at Hoover, and I think everyone should come see it,” Rogers said.
The production process of “Clue” was much different from the production of previous plays.
In the past, actors were responsible for their own wardrobe, but “Clue” has its own costume designers.
The costumes are incredible for the show, I’m really excited for people to see them,” Selway said.
In the play, many of the characters are strangers, but in real life, the cast is very close. The cast has created inside jokes, pre-show traditions, and countless memories. One of their favorite things to do together was warm-up before rehearsal.
The warm-ups, usually led by Keim, who plays Professor Plum, are filled with tongue-twisters, vocal exercises, and recitings of favorite lines from the show. Right before the show, the cast does the hokey-pokey together.
Though filled with murder, “Clue” is also a comedy.
Selway says her “favorite part of the show is when Reyes Felix Jr. (Colonel Mustard) tells his jokes! They are hilarious.”
Herbulot-Thomas, who plays Mr. Wadsworth, had a silly comment about why Hoover students should experience live theater.
“People should see our show because they need to stop scrolling TikTok and get a Clue!”
With great actors, strong friendships, incredible set and costumes, “Clue” is a play worth dying for.
