Hoover’s pool is currently under demolition, as a part of a $15 million construction project to create a new pool.
The pool will contain wrought iron walls allowing students to look in and out of the pool, as well as keeping a shallow end to allow younger groups to learn how to swim.
“The total cost for this project is approximately $15 million, including design and construction,” stated Hagop Kassabian, an administrator in the Facilities Planning and Maintenance Department in the Glendale Unified School District.
The $15 million cost includes architectural design, engineering and pool design fees.
“This is really exciting for all of our students here at Hoover, especially the students who participate in any aquatic sports,” Hoover Principal Dr. Jeremy Spurley said. “To have a real regulation size pool, that’ll be awesome.”
Other fees include Division of the State Architect (DSA) review and inspection fees, materials and testing and inspection fees, as well as abatement reports and all construction related costs.
“I think it’ll be great when it gets done,” Hoover assistant principal Evan Robb said. “It’ll be very upgraded, state of the art, and give our sports a real chance to be showcased.”
The pool demolition has gone without trouble for the most part, besides some short-lived plumbing issues.
“It’s long overdue and will be a nice pool when it’s finally done,” Hoover athletic director Jack Van Patten said.
