The Hoover High basketball team keeps finding ways to win.
Despite trailing by 15 points, the Tornados rallied to defeat San Bernardino, 62-57, on Friday night at home, advancing to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs.
Hoover will play Buckley High on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home with a chance to advance to the semifinals. Buckley has an 18-10 record on the season. It finished second in its league.
Hoover started slow, trailing, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter and 35-24 at halftime.
But Hoover mounted a comeback in the second half, largely thanks to senior Zack Van Patten and sophomore Justin Herrera.
Van Patten had 10 of Hoover’s 18 points in the third quarter.
“We were kind of disrespected and we took that personally,” said Van Patten, who finished with 19 points.
After being down all three quarters, the Tornados didn’t disappoint in the fourth quarter, when Herrera took over.
He had 11 points in the fourth quarter, finishing with 17 points.
“We stuck with it, we were down 15 not playing well, but we picked it up,” said Hoover Coach Jack Van Patten.
Jaden Duncan had 16 points for the Tornados, including four three-pointers.
“I feel amazing, all of our teammates stepped up and made this a good game,” said Zack Van Patten.
Coach Van Patten was also really proud of the team.
“Everybody did something well, we had good team effort and that’s the way it’s supposed to be so we are really happy,” he said.
