Hoover welcomed a new teacher specialist.
Jozet Petrosian joined the Hoover team in the second semester and already began working with students in Hoover High.
Petrosian was a science teacher in middle school for 26 years. Her love for science came from the books that her parents got her during early childhood. She was frequently reading, thinking and speaking about science.
“I wanted to experience high school after working in middle school for so long, so when the opportunity came, I thought ‘there you go, this was the sign I was looking for,’ so here I am,” says Petrosian.
Petrosian moved to the United States from Iran at the age of 13.
At first she went to Boston, but then decided to move to Glendale because of the education opportunities.
Petrosian shared: “I love Boston, but Glendale is my home. I spent most of my life here, it will always have a special place in my heart.”
When talking about her childhood she stated: “I was an ELD student, wishing someone could have offered help for me.”
Her experience as an ELD student made it easier for her to find the best solutions when it came to helping those who seeked extra help.
She shared a solution that she came up with when facing a problem regarding language barrier in her class:
“I identified those students who needed extra support, because of the language barrier,” she said. “To help them, I asked my students who spoke multiple languages and were willing to help to become my TA’s during this period, moving to my other period to receive the required education. In the end, an adult translator was introduced to our class who was a great addition to our team.”
As of right now, her goal is to locate main obstacles students face during high school by hearing them out in order to consider their opinion, and make the educational journey easier.
