The Hoover High softball team defeated Pasadena, 12-11, in a thrilling nine-inning Pacific League game on Thursday at home.
“It was very long, but we worked very hard and we just wanted to win it for Paola [Cano], since it was her senior night,” said Hoover’s Younona Babayan. “We did what we needed to do.”
The game started three runs from Pasadena at the top of the first inning. Hoover responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
The game remained tied until the fourth inning, when Pasadena took a two-run lead.
During the sixth and seventh innings, Hoover was able to score two runs to tie the score, sending the game into extra innings.
Pasadena scored in the top of the eighth inning, but Hoover responded in the bottom of the inning to send the game to the ninth inning.
Hoover’s defense worked hard to make sure Pasadena did not score.
After three outs, it was Hoover’s turn at bat. The Tornados decided to walk all the way home.
Hoover freshman Anahit Kazaryan, the first person to bat in the inning, walked all the way home due to the pitcher walking straight Tornados.
Cano hit a double and walked three times.
Hoover’s Kimberly De Leon had a hit, and scored two runs, on top of playing key defense for the team.
Hoover center fielder Natalie Menasaka hit a triple and scored a run, and pitcher Evelyn Ortiz had a hit, three walks, and two runs, on top of pitching all nine innings.
Hannah Parker, Arijana Matijasevic, Sophia Hernandez, Samantha Marquez, were also able to score runs or collect hits.
On top of Kazaryan scoring the winning run, she was also able to get another run, and four walks.
“I’m really proud of everyone for sticking it out even though it was a really hard and scary game,” said Kazaryan.
