Hoover High hosted its annual Relay for Life event, bringing students, teachers, and staff members together to support the fight against cancer.
The ACSY for Life Club brought the event to life.
“All the preparation took months since we had to make sure all the schedules lined up and we got donations on time,” said Ani Weimar, a member of the ACSY for Life Club. “We were able to receive donations from Pizza Pie, Costco, and Trader Joe’s to provide food for everyone. Overall, everything ran pretty smoothly. And I think the productive cabinet along with all attendees following the rules allowed for a fun, memorable time at relay.”
A valuable contribution was also made by the advisor of the ACSY for Life club, everyone’s beloved math teacher, William Le Clear. He brought both his enthusiasm and dedication to the cause, inspiring students to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
The event kicked off with a student-teacher volleyball and basketball game where students ended up winning both of the games.
“It was really great seeing the teachers just having fun with their students even if they did lose,” said Max Demarco, a junior at Hoover High.
After the games everyone got to enjoy pizza and participate in numerous fun activities, including Just Dance, a watermelon eating competition, and an egg hunt.
Following up the games and meal, the atmosphere shifted as participants gathered for the ceremony where survivors or those who’s loved ones battled with cancer shared their stories.
“I spoke on behalf of Hoover’s Pep Team to honor our late advisor Ms. Anita [Bacon] and share her battle with cancer,” shared shared Nelly Nikogosova, who is a junior in Hoover High School and also a board member of ACSY for life club at Hoover.
“Listening to other speakers was emotional, but it also showed the amount of strength and resilience we all have. Relay for Life is such an important event and I’m thankful to have been a part of it as it’s for a great cause and brings everyone together for a long, unforgettable night.”
In order to pay tribute to those affected by cancer, participants walked silently around the school campus, also known as the Luminary Walk, with luminaria bags lining the path.
“I absolutely loved the luminary walk. It was a very mindful moment where everyone felt connected. It showed each and every student’s support for our fight against cancer,” said Hoover junior Nathan Baneham.
In the end, the Relay for Life event not only brought people together in solidarity but also highlighted the incredible generosity within the school community.
With a total of $12,126 raised, participants not only made a significant contribution to the fight against cancer, but also demonstrated the power of unity.
