Hoover High School’s Art Gallery hosted the show “Changing Seasons” on October 11. The show displayed the artwork of the AP art students. The gallery was curated by Angelina Jean Naguit and Isabel Maghaguian (’25). The show was a “pop-up” style exhibition that ran for one day. The following is a first person account.
When you walk in you are immediately greeted with a chalky, earthy, yet inviting smell. You can see many different art pieces, some vibrant and others more monotone. There were paintings, photos, and sculptures most of which would be classified as modern art. Every piece was beautifully done and you can see a lot of work and effort was put into the art and the gallery itself.
A diverse crowd attended the gallery show. Students with their friends, parents, and teachers were brought together by the art. Art brings different types of people together, but it also demonstrates the need for these galleries since they connect people and create a sense of unity and community here at Hoover.
“I think the beauty of looking at art in general is that you can find yourself in it,” attendee Marineh Amirkhani Namagerdi (’25) said. “And you can immerse yourself in your own experiences when you look at an art piece. I think the beautiful thing is that you can also see their perspective. I think it’s interesting because I know some of the people who made these pieces so it can give me a better insight into them as well.”
The student pieces are original and portray their own perspectives and experiences. The artists did not just paint, sculpt, draw, or take pictures, they immersed themselves in the art.
Talking about her painting “The Thread Of Life,” show curator Naguit (’25) described her process: “At first I wanted it to be kind of like a dichotomy,” she explained. “The skeleton is juxtaposed with flowers.” When asked about the thematic meaning, Naguit said it became sort of “a commentary on beauty standards.”
Ms. Danial, the photography and beginning art teacher said that she was proud of the students.
Hopefully, we will see many more exhibitions of student art at Hoover High School.
