Hoover has held their annual club rush. This event introduces all of our amazing clubs here at Hoover.
Assistant Principal Dr. Romela Khachikyan oversaw this big annual event at Hoover. “We want to make sure that students know the clubs that we have here so the best way to do that is to spend about a week in the student union, have the advisors come out, the presidents come out, advertise their clubs,” said Dr. Khachikyan. “It was a wonderful event because so many students attended the event during lunch and signed up.”
Hoover has created clubs for many different reasons. Clubs are a way to connect with people and feel like you belong in the community. You can also create your own club to realize your vision for what Hoover needs.
“Clubs are all student run and so these clubs are started by students and are for students,” added Principal Dr. Jeremy Spurley. “If there is an idea out there that we don’t already have as a club, any student can feel free to start a club here.”
One example of a student-created club is the “Open Arms Society” club. “The purpose was to help immigrants with understanding how the American school system works,” club president Mia Marekhashvili (‘28) said. “As someone who enrolled at Hoover High School during her sophomore year I was really confused because I didn’t get much help that was needed at that time; therefore I went through the struggle alone.”
Students have created clubs about sports, languages, and even Ping Pong Club. This is one of the many ways to connect, to have a community, and to feel like you belong. Research confirms a feeling of belonging is essential for school satisfaction and success. Club participation can even be great for college applications, to show that you were a part of school activities and of the community.
