During Valentine’s Day, a lot of people may get chocolate or flowers, but at Herbert Hoover High School you can get a Singing Valentine. You may have the question: “What is a Singing Valentine?” A Singing Valentine is when people come to your class period and start singing a song to you while you get circled by them.
When interviewing the choir teacher, Mrs.Estep, I asked, “What songs [were] available for Singing Valentines this year?” She said, “We [had] three choices for everyone to choose from. We [had] “Everything I Wanted” by Paramore, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli, and “Glue Song” by Beabadoobee.”
I also asked, “How long has Hoover been doing Singing Valentines?” Mrs. Estep said, “Hoover has been singing Valentines before I even came here and I started working here ten years ago.” She also said, “It’s one of those things that everyone loves being sung to.”
We also asked, “How long does it take for the choir students to prepare for Singing Valentines?” Mrs.Estep said, “It takes six weeks since the beginning of the second semester.”
While Valentine’s Day has passed, we asked how students were able to get Singing Valentines this year. Mrs.Estep replied, “Students [could] buy when in the Quad during lunch until the 12th or on the 13th and 14th outside of the choir room.” A Singing Valentines was $5 while a Singing Valentine and a rose cost $8.
We also interviewed the choir students Eliza Materosyan (28), Paloma Lorenzo (26), Jayla Blanca (28), Sophia Ortiz (28), Sky Srivitas (26), Melania Magardomyan (28), Jeanna Santiago (28), Valerie Jolhakyan (27). When asked how they pick songs, they said, “We choose what is popular and what people like.” When asked how they feel when singing to people, they said, “It’s funny because it’s kind of embarrassing”. They also mentioned their favorite part of singing Valentine’s is singing to people all day.
