The Herbert Hoover High School girls’ golf team has officially started its first season, giving a chance to try something new and represent their school.
Led by Coach Kirk Sharma and Coach Julianna Salce, the team includes both beginners and players with some experience, all excited to learn and grow in the sport.
For many members, this is their first time playing golf.
One player, who joined in May, said she has enjoyed the experience from the start.
“It’s really fun and a great experience to meet new people,’’ Hoover golfer Alexandra Rose explained.
Learning the basics was a challenge at first, but she said focusing on the right form helped her improve.
Another teammate shared that the best part of joining the team has been the friendships formed.
“Everyone is so kind and welcoming, and together we all have a good time golfing,” Hoover golfer Stella Pennacchioli said.
She also grew up around golf:
“I don’t really watch professional tournaments, but I know about Tiger Woods, and my mom plays too, so I’ve been exposed since I was little,” Pennacchioli added.
Her personal goal is to reach a level where she feels confident playing casually.
There are players who joined the team because of the excitement of starting something new.
“Golf is a new sport at Hoover and it seemed so exciting and inspiring to be a part of the team,’’ Hoover senior golfer Evangelina Romanova shared.
She credits the team’s positive spirit and her coaches, saying, “they are the best one could dream of. The spirit of the team is built up on their shoulders.’’
Sharma said his approach is to keep practices both fun and focused, especially since golf can be difficult for beginners.
“I try to keep it fun and light, but also focused,” he explained. “The last thing I want is for this to be a frustrating experience for my players.”
The team is entering competition season with its first game.
“They’re excited and nervous,” Sharma said. “But this is the first time Hoover’s had a girls’ golf team in many years, so they’re making history.”
He added that the girls have shown strong teamwork.
“One word I’d use is camaraderie,” Sharma added.
“The girls really support each other, and there’s none of that toxic competition.”
Beyond the game itself, Sharma believes the lessons golf teaches will carry into the players’ lives.
“Golf is a sport where you are going to go through highs and lows, and when that happens, you need to learn how to be resilient and mentally strong,” he said. “Life is the same—it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
With a mix of excitement, teamwork, and determination, the Hoover High School girls’ golf team is already making history in its first season.
