The Hoover Tornado Marching Band competed at the California State Band Champions (CSBC) South Coast Invitational at Costa Mesa High School on Saturday, obtaining first place with a score of 74.750.
Multiple awards went to the HTMB, including tournament champions, 3A division champions, high music performance, and high percussion.
“The students worked really hard to get everything done ahead of this performance, and I’m really proud we were able to perform our entire marching band show,” said HTMB band director Melissa Campbell. “Not a lot of schools get to do that, and it’s a thing that we’ve worked really hard to do over the past few years.”
Despite their success, the HTMB still has a lot to work on, according to assistant drum major Nolan Flores.
“I know in my heart it wasn’t our best work as an ensemble, but what we got from that only shows a lot of potential,” said Flores. “The fact that we were still able to win even though it wasn’t our best run shows that we could do a whole lot better, and with what we have, we’re doing really well so far.”
