STAFF ED: Betsy DeVos teaches ignorance
March 7, 2017
As the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. But what if the ignorance comes from someone who is holding onto your future? Not so much of a bliss now.
Being a student at a public school, imagine if your secretary of education is a person who never went to a public school, refused to make her children go to a public school, pushed for vouchers to get tax money to support Christian schools, and has barely any political experience? Well, get ready. Because the imagination has just turned into a reality.
Billionaire Betsy DeVos is the new U.S. Secretary of Education. Vice Presidents Mike Pence cast the deciding vote, a first for any vice president when it comes to confirming a cabinet nominee. That’s because the Senate split 50-50 on her nomination due to misgivings some senators had about her qualifications.
Two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined the Democrats voting against DeVos, who favors a low-regulation system in which private companies can profit from public education.
DeVos being a devout Christian conservative cannot be fair about making certain decisions about public schools having never spent a day at a public school.
And now she is in charge of more than 70 million students.
