Hoover’s Climate Change Club aims to raise awareness about climate change and global sustainability efforts, allowing students to participate in meaningful actions. The club meets in the French room (11312) at lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays monthly.
Club Cabinet:
- Co-Presidents: Mary Ghazaryan (’26), Melania Yapundjian (’26)
- Co-Secretaries: Tatiana Taroian (’26), Kuvira Kapoor (’26)
- Treasurer: Shervin Naeli (’26)
- Historian/Publicist: Sophia Hernandez (’26)
Mary Ghazaryan shares: “My role in the club is leading presentations, coordinating with the Glendale Office of Sustainability to find out how to represent the club, and taking part in community events.” She continues, “The impact of the club is informational meetings where anyone interested can learn more about climate change and sustainability. We also represent Hoover at events throughout Glendale.”
The students within the club gain educational insight and take part in activities, such as fundraisers, with proceeds supporting organizations like “Team Trees” and “Oceans” – initiatives focused on planting trees and cleaning the oceans. The club also volunteers at local schools, such as Mark Keppel Elementary, where they give educational presentations and organize fun, interactive activities for younger students.
Key Events for the Club:
- Earth Day Fair: The club provides educational posters and activity booths and represents Hoover alongside many other Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) schools.
- Annual Interactive Event at Keppel Elementary: Climate Change Club members give presentations, organize games, and create activities for the students.
Melania Yapundjian (’26), reflects on the club’s impact and student involvement: “We work on the sideshows that inform our club members about what’s happening in the world regarding climate change, global warming, and natural disasters. The club mainly impacts the participants, around 50 students, by keeping them updated on important global issues, like flooding in Spain or wildfires in California.”
She adds, “Students participate in various ways, especially by helping with fundraisers. Those not in the cabinet provide feedback through surveys and contribute ideas for our activities. It’s a collaborative effort to choose what to focus on for the fundraisers and how to get others involved.”
Through these efforts, Hoover’s Climate Change Club continues to educate, raise awareness, and inspire action for the protection of our environment.
