The role of homework in a student’s education has been widely debated. Some people say that it helps students reinforce the concepts they learn in school, while others say that it is harmful to mental health. Since Hoover High School is a diverse campus, people may have varying perspectives on this topic.
When asked about his perspective on homework Spanish Teacher Rosendo Rojas said, “I think students need homework to reinforce ideas taught in school,” adding “it also teaches students skills such as discipline.” Rojas believes that for students to process and understand information they must go home and reinforce the ideas and lessons they learned in class. Research supports his claim.
But what about the students? What are their opinions on homework?
When asked about this topic Imogen Cohn (’28) opined, “For me, homework has always been my main priority, so it takes away time from my passions and it often leads to stress.”
This variation of opinion shows that while most educators see homework as a beneficial tool to reinforce learning, students feel that it adds unnecessary pressure. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Educators should take into account the diverse needs of their students. This could mean reducing the volume of work or being more flexible with assignments.
