Armenian Heritage Month, celebrated every April, is a time dedicated to honoring the rich history, culture, and traditions of Armenian culture. The month is full of colorful celebrations, neighborhood get-togethers, traditional food, and memories about their past. Armenian Heritage Month is a chance to celebrate and spread awareness of this community’s unique personality through festivities and delicious food.
Traditional dances and songs are performed to showcase Armenian artistic heritage. Elders and young generations share folk tales, poetry, and literature that have been passed down through generations.
Families and communities gather to enjoy a variety of traditional dishes that have been prepared for centuries. Some of the most beloved Armenian foods include dolma, khorovats, khash, gata, pahklava, sujukh, and many more.
Last year, Herbert Hoover High School lit up with music, dance, and cultural pride as students and staff came together to celebrate Armenian Heritage Month. Held during lunchtime in the school’s upper quad, traditional Armenian musicians were invited to perform, bringing amazing instruments such as the dhol and a zurna and bringing joy to the heart of the campus.
The fact that not only students participated but also teachers, staff, and even school administrators joined in the cheering, dancing, and singing brought even more excitement to the celebration. Smiles and laughter filled the air as the entire upper quad transformed into a celebration of culture and unity. Angela Galstyan (’27) said, “Being Armenian is a huge part of who I am. At Hoover, it’s amazing to see our heritage recognized and respected. It makes me feel seen.”
Rudolf Petrosyan (’27) said, “This month isn’t just about looking back—it’s about showing everyone that being Armenian is a living, growing identity we’re proud to carry every day.”
Elina Yeghiazaryan (’28) said, “I love when we get to share traditional Armenian dances and music at school events. It reminds me that our culture is alive and thriving, even far from Armenia.”
The success of the celebration last year has people excited for even more activities. This year, there will be a celebration on April 17, which will remind everyone to bring their spirits up and stay strong like every culture. At Hoover High, Armenian Heritage Month remains a highlight, reminding students that school isn’t just a place for academics but a space to celebrate who they are.
