On March 20th, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order which allowed the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to take whatever steps necessary to close The Department of Education.
According to Fox News, Republican senators have introduced a bill that will eliminate the Department of Education. This bill is intended to give back power to the states and to grant schools more control.
Congress will decide on whether or not to close the department. According to BBC News, “the closing of a federal department would require 60 votes.” As there are 53 Republican senators and 47 Democrat senators, it’s not likely the bill will pass.
However, The Department of Education has announced that it has “initiated a reduction in force.” This act impacts 50% of the departments workforce, as they will be placed on administrative leave. Nearly 2,100 people will be affected from the cut (BBC).
