The Hoover High boys’ basketball team’s season is still alive.
The Tornados defeated Savanna, 72-70, on Wednesday in overtime in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs to advance to the second round for the first time since 2014.
Hoover will play San Bernardino at 7 p.m. on Friday at home. San Bernardino defeated Desert Chapel, 84-27, in the first round. San Bernardino finished third in the Mountain Valley League. The winner of the Hoover-San Bernardino game will play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday against Temecula Prep or Buckley.
Zack Van Patten, a senior, led the Tornados with 25 points, including 12 in the second quarter. Justin Herrera, a sophomore, had 20 points, including 11 points, with three three-pointers, in the fourth quarter.
Michael Shamoun, a senior, was instrumental in overtime. He scored five of Hoover’s eight points, with three of those points coming from the free-throw line. Van Patten had Hoover’s other three points in overtime.
Jaden Duncan had 11 points and Hagop Demirjian had nine points for the Tornados, the fifth-ranked team in the division.
The last time Hoover won a first-round playoff game was in 2015, when it defeated Garey, 92-67, in the opening round of the Division III-A bracket. The Tornados lost to eventual division champion Beverly Hills, 72-57, in the second round.
