Hoover’s Public Safety Academy became investigators while examining how homicide cases are solved, giving students a hands-on look at real investigative techniques used by law enforcement.

During the activity, students analyzed evidence, reviewed case details, and discussed how investigators determine what happened in a homicide case. The lesson was designed to help students understand the complexity of criminal investigations and the importance of careful evidence analysis.

“By working through a homicide investigation scenario, students learn how investigators analyze evidence and think critically when solving serious cases,” said April Schwartz, the Public Safety Academy instructor.

Students worked through different steps of the investigative process, including reviewing timelines, identifying possible suspects, and examining how physical evidence can connect people to a crime scene. The exercise showed how small details can play a major role in solving serious crimes.

“It was interesting to see how investigators build a timeline and connect different clues to understand what happened,” said student Meri Keleshyan.

The activity also highlighted the skills needed for careers in public safety, such as critical thinking, teamwork, and attention to detail. Programs like Hoover’s Public Safety Academy aim to prepare students for future careers in fields like law enforcement, criminal justice, and emergency services.

“The investigation showed how important every piece of evidence can be when trying to solve a homicide case,” said Scarlette Kamalian, a Hoover student in the Public Safety Academy.

By working through a simulated homicide investigation, students gained a better understanding of how investigators solve cases and the responsibility involved in working in the public safety field.
