The Hoover Drama program staged its winter production, Gloves On, on Thursday and Friday at the Hoover Little Theatre.
Written by Eva Lyudmirsky and directed by Annabel Mardiroussian and Monica Simonyan, Gloves On is a one-act play entirely student-led. It is set during the French Revolution, where Astrid, a young woman born into a wealthy family, uses her artwork as an escape from the war and an inevitable marriage to a man that she doesn’t love.
Throughout the play, the audience observes Astrid’s character development as she discovers the importance of making decisions for herself in order to move on from events of trauma and stress.
Most of the play was managed during winter break.
“[It entailed] getting people together and making sure communication was cleared up,” explained supervisor and cast member Sky Srivilas. “We wouldn’t have been able to [put on] this play if we didn’t take time out of our winter break to do so.”
The message and dedication that was put into Gloves On was well-received by members of the audience.
“I think it was very well written with lots of character development and complex emotions,” said viewer Ella Zakian. “The play was easy to watch and interesting. I found myself impressed with it the whole time.”
“I thought that it was really poetic because most stories focus on the people in poverty… so I [found it very] interesting to see things from a more wealthy point of view,” described viewer Adrianna Acevedo. “It [added] more layers to a story that was already deep.”
