Hoover held an Open House on Thursday. Ceramics showed off their gallery, selling ice cream in bowls that students made as well as showing the parents how to throw.
“It was really amazing,” said ceramics teacher Gina Brownstein. “We had so many people come to Open House.” We had many, many, many people throwing on the wheels. We had eighth graders throwing on the wheels. We had siblings teaching their parents, and that was really fun.
“We also had an empty bowls fundraiser where people picked out a bowl and we filled it with ice cream and the money that we got from that is going to the L.A. food bank.
“And we made almost $1000 to donate to feed the homeless and the hungry. I’m so proud of them.”
Senior Aimee Ross was one of the students who helped with the event.
“I helped quite a few people,” Ross said. “I centered some clay for a few people, and then helped them make bowls, which was really fun, and their bowls turned out really, really nice, especially for it being their first time on the wheel.”
Senior Kuvira Kapoor joined Ross in helping students.
“It was cool to see that so many people were interested in working on the wheel and just trying it out and many people were so brave about it,” Kapoor said
GUSD Board of Education President Ingrid Gunnell made bowls on the wheel.
“I had an amazing experience in Mrs.Brownstein’s studio class learning from the students,” Gunnell said.
