Hoover High School is celebrating Yellow Ribbon Week, this week, a time dedicated to spreading kindness, respect, and unity throughout the school community. Yellow Ribbon Week reminds students to stand up against bullying and to support one another.
The color yellow represents hope, friendship, and a promise to treat others with care.
“I felt that although they were just basic ribbons , they held a deeper meaning and communicated a healthy and happy message to not only the students of the school but also to the staff admin and overall community,” said Trina Shahmirzaian, an ASB officer.
The ASB students have played an important role in making Yellow Ribbon Week successful. They helped set up yellow ribbons around the school campus, tying them on fences, railings, and trees so students could see them as they walked to class.
“Yellow Ribbon Week reminds us that every student belongs and every life matters,” said ASB Advisor Janna Kasmanian. “At our school, we stand together to support one another, speak up, and choose kindness because no one should ever feel alone.”
The ASB students also decorated outside the school campus, helping spread the message of kindness to the surrounding community.
In addition to the decorations, here’s what’s happening in the quad at lunch all week to celebrate Yellow Ribbon Week.
Students can participate in the Music Drop by sharing a song for Yellow Ribbon Week and helping create a playlist that motivates, inspires, and uplifts others.
Students are also invited to be the “1” in the word kind by posing with the photo backdrop and spreading positivity.
Kindness cards will be available for students to write kind messages to share and help make someone’s day brighter.
Students can also sign the pledge to help keep Hoover a “No Place for Hate” school.
Lara Suri the Teacher on Special Assignment – Restorative Practices said,
“The lunchtime activities during Yellow Ribbon Week give Hoover students meaningful opportunities to live out our PBIS tenet of respect,” said Lara Suri, a teacher on special assignment. “Throughout the week students are encouraged to express kindness in different ways building towards our No Place For Hate pledge signing on Friday where students commit to maintaining a respectful and inclusive school environment.”
The week will end with a Grand Finale on Friday at lunch, when the scholarship winners of the Hoover Respect Logo Challenge will be revealed.
