During the month of February, Hoover celebrated Black History Month by honoring influential Black leaders, artists, athletes, and scientists who have made a lasting impact on American culture and history.
The ASB worked throughout the month to ensure students learned something new each week.
ASB student Sophie Gharabian, leader of the Celebrations Committee, organized the weekly themes.
From February 10–13, the school recognized athletes.
From February 17–20, the focus shifted to literature and the arts.
From February 23–27, the themes highlighted politics, leadership, science, and technology.
Large posters were created each week and displayed in the upper quad near the pool and student union. They remained up through the end of the month so all students had the opportunity to view and learn from them.
“I felt happy planning everything because it showed how much Hoover cared,” Gharabian said. “Everyone worked really hard, and it was nice seeing students stop to read the posters and learn.”
The Sports Committee created posters featuring prominent athletes such as LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Jackie Robinson, Serena Williams, and Simone Biles.
The Spirited Committee highlighted political leaders including Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama, along with scientists such as George Washington Carver and Patricia Bath.
The Celebrations Committee focused on artists and singers like Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, and Whitney Houston. The Fundraising Committee honored influential authors in literature, while the Marketing Committee created flyers inviting students to participate in weekly Friday celebrations. D
uring lunch on Fridays, jazz and music by Black artists were played to create a festive and meaningful atmosphere.
ASB students also produced videos showcasing Hoover’s appreciation for Black History Month and highlighting the hard work and dedication behind the celebration.
Tatiana Bahadourian, who created the Black History Month videos posted on the Hoover ASB Instagram page, said, “I was proud to create the videos because I wanted everyone to see how much effort our school put into celebrating Black History Month. It was really meaningful to share it with our community online.”
Janna Kasmanian, the ASB teacher and activities director, added, “I was very proud of our students for coming together and showing respect for Black history. Their teamwork and creativity truly made this month meaningful.”
